Excerpt from Artist Statement:

In Underwater, Romelle examines her connection to water, particularly the ocean. Living in the landlocked state of Colorado, she often resorts to memories and dreams to fill in the blanks, evoking the dichotomy of peacefulness and restlessness that is fixed in our unconscious.

Using a combination of acrylics, spray paint and oil pastel, in this series, Romelle looks at water as a metaphor for the passage of time. She is inspired by the range of characteristics that water can take on; the viewer might find the prism that appears on water’s surface, its dark and ruthless depths, or its ability, like memory, to warp what looks into it.

“In the water’s surface, I saw the reflection of memories. But it also became a projection into the future. While I simmered on who I was in different eras of my life, water has remained a constant and a lens with which to examine what I was and what I can become.”
