Excerpt from Artist Statement:
FRUTAS BRUTALES is Romelle’s exploration of contrasts.
Throughout her presentation the viewer is invited to consider both softness and strength, color and industry, fruit and concrete. Created during her residency at JupiterFab in Guadalajara, the work reflects her time in the city while carrying the imprint of her roots in Detroit’s industrial landscape.
Using acrylic, oil pastel, and chicken wire, she builds layers of tension between structure and decay. Influenced by Orozco’s murals, her sweeping, sunlit mural embraces scale and movement.
Through a soft and playful lens, FRUTAS BRUTALES considers what it means to ripen, decay, and rebuild again.
